The Pit House at Fremont Indian State Park

Inside Fremont Indian State Park you can camp in a modernized pit house! Pit houses are large circular houses built half in the ground that are entered through a hole in the top with a ladder down. Pit houses were used by indigenous people.

The modernized version of a pit house is a unique way to camp. It gives you a small feel for what it may have been like, but with modern conveniences. Camping here will be a highlight for your children that they will talk about for years to come.

The pit house includes-

  • beds for 6 people (1 full and 4 twin)
  • 1 table inside & 1 picnic table outside
  • fire pit outside
  • 6 folding chairs for indoor use only
  • electric fireplace inside
  • garbage can inside
  • electricity (lights & outlets)
  • night light
  • cleaning supplies
  • Restrooms & showers located a short walk away in the campground

What is it like in the Pit House?

The pit house is very spacious. You will have plenty of room to sleep and for your things. The temperature was perfect. It kept cool in the day and warm in the night. It stayed at a near constant temperature of about 70 degrees. 

When the lights are off at night it gets pitch black. They provide a nightlight for you and your kiddos.

Rules for the pit house

  • No animals inside
  • No cooking inside
  • Must clean up before you leave. Cleaning supplies are supplied for you. 

How to reserve the Pit House?

Reserve the Pit House at Reserve America by clicking hereThe Pit House gets reserved quickly on the weekends. If planning to camp here on a weekend you need to book months in advance. Most week nights are available. 

When reserving, the pit house is labeled under, “cabins or lodgings”. 

Where is the Pit House Located?

The Pit House is located 20 miles west of Richfield, Utah on I-70 inside the Sam Stowe Campground in Fremont Indian State Park. 

You are secluded in the campground as the pit house is the furthest camping spot in the campground. The cliffs that serve as a backdrop truly make this a stunning place to stay!
