Belly of the Dragon

You truly feel like you are exploring inside the belly of a dragon on this unique hike. If you find yourself in the Kanab area this is a must do experience that your children will always remember.

What to expect at the trailhead

There is a parking area just 1/10th of a mile from the entrance to the belly of the dragon. There are no amenities such as a bathroom. You can expect a lot of cars as this is a popular destination.

What to expect along the trail

The trail to the entrance is very short. Expect a flat, sandy trail until you get to the entrance.

Once at the entrance you will need to climb down some cement slabs into the wash. Since the belly of the dragon is technically the wash that goes under hwy 89 you will be walking through the tunnel that serves as a drainage system.

Be patient as there are likely to be many other people exploring inside. Inside can get dark which makes it hard to see the occasional rocks on the path. The actual belly of the dragon is only about another 1/10th of a mile long.

What to do

Don’t stop at the end of the tunnel. Keep going up the wash a little further. Your children will love playing in the sand and just exploring.

This is a fantastic place for your little ones to use their imaginations! Stay a while if it isn’t too crowded. We have heard it can get crowded enough where there is a line to even enter the belly of the dragon. There were a lot of people when we arrived, but they quickly left and we had the entire place to ourselves for most of our time there. We went on a Thursday evening from 4:00 pm- 5:15 pm if that helps in your planning.

How to get here

The Belly of the Dragon is a wash located under hwy 89 about 1 mile south of Mount Carmel Junction and 17 miles north of Kanab. Look for a dirt road turn off on the west side of hwy 89. The parking lot will be .25 miles down the dirt road.

Happy Trails

Explore inside what looks like the belly of a dragon! A fun and unique experience that will spark your children’s imaginations.

It is a short experience that is known to get crowded. Worth it to stop by on your next trip to Kanab, but not worth a long drive if it is the only thing on your itinerary. This is sure to be an experience your children will talk about for years to come.
